You’ve booked Dubai. You have the Burj Khalifa on your list and a desert safari pinned. Maybe Abu Dhabi if there’s time. Sound familiar?
Here’s what most guides skip: if you leave the UAE having only seen Dubai, you’ve missed six completely different countries packed into one small federation. All driveable. All worth it.
The entire UAE from Abu Dhabi to Ras Al Khaimah is roughly 400 km. You can cover all 7 emirates in 9 days without ever catching a flight.
Important Things for First-Time Visitors
There is no inter-emirate train or metro. The Dubai Metro is great within Dubai, that’s it. Your real options:
- Renting a car is the most flexible option. As the roads are excellent, and Google Maps works perfectly.
- Book a private transfer for ideal longer runs like Dubai to Fujairah through the mountains.
- Hire a chauffeur-driven vehicle for best multi-day itineraries when you don’t want to navigate.
Royal Wheel UAE covers all 7 emirates with luxury cars, buses, and chauffeur services. WhatsApp +971566063689 or visit royalwheeluae.com.

1. Dubai

Everyone knows Dubai. Most people only see one corner of it.
The Dubai that tourists visit only Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Palm Jumeirah which is Downtown and Jumeirah. That’s maybe 15% of a very large emirate. Here’s the rest of it worth your time:
Must Visit Places in Dubai
- Old Dubai Creek cross it by abra boat for 1 AED. Best value in any modern city on earth
- Gold Souk & Spice Souk in Deira is the real functioning markets, not tourist stages
- Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood is a wind-tower architecture, the Dubai Museum, actual old city
- Kite Beach is where Dubai actually relaxes instead of performing
- Hatta is 45 mins southeast, kayaking in the Hajar Mountains, 0% of what people expect from Dubai
Skip if short on time
- Global Village (seasonal) is also fun but not essential
- The View at The Palm is also nice but the Burj Khalifa At The Top is better
⏱ Time needed 3 days minimum · 4 if you’re adding Hatta · Don’t rush
📍 Base yourself Downtown or Jumeirah for convenience · Deira if you want character
2. Abu Dhabi

The capital. Covers 84% of the UAE’s land area. Constantly underestimated by people who treat it as a half-day trip from Dubai.
Must Visit Places In Abu Dhabi
- Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the world’s largest mosques, free entry SunThu, go early before tour groups
- Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island is genuinely one of the great museums of this century, not hype
- Yas Island is Ferrari World (world’s fastest roller coaster at 240 km/h), Yas Marina Circuit, Warner Bros. World
- Abu Dhabi Corniche is 8 km waterfront that feels genuinely liveable and calm
- Liwa Oasis & the Empty Quarter is if you want the real desert, these are the largest sand dunes on earth, 250 metres high in places
Worth knowing
- Louvre Abu Dhabi is closed on Mondays
- Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque closes to non-Muslim visitors during prayer times — check the schedule
- Abu Dhabi is noticeably more conservative in dress expectations than Dubai. Shoulders and knees covered outside resorts
⏱ Time needed 2 days comfortably · 3 if going west to Liwa
📍 Base yourself Corniche area for the city feel · Yas Island for entertainment
3. Sharjah

UNESCO’s Cultural Capital of the Arab World. Sits 15 km from Dubai and feels like a completely different country.
Must Visit Places in Sharjah
- Museum of Islamic Civilisation where traces Islamic contributions to science, navigation, medicine, and art across 13 centuries. Genuinely fascinating
- Heart of Sharjah heritage district is a preserved traditional architecture and souks done properly
- Sharjah Art Museum is one of the largest art collections in the Gulf
- Al Majaz Waterfront on Khalid Lagoon is a 100-metre fountain, good evening walk
- Khor Fakkan on the east coast is a Sharjah’s territory on the Indian Ocean side, excellent snorkelling
Important before you go
- Sharjah is a dry emirate and no alcohol anywhere
- More conservative dress code than Dubai but, in public spaces, cover up
- Sharjah International Book Fair every November draws publishers from 80+ countries is one of the largest in the world
⏱ Time needed 1 full day for the museums · 2 if adding Khor Fakkan
4. Ajman

The smallest emirate. Most people drive straight through it. Most people are missing out.
Must Visit Places in Ajman
- Ajman Museum inside an 18th-century fort that served as the ruler’s residence until 1981. Excellent pearl diving history
- Dhow building yard at Ajman Creek is an actual craftsmen building actual boats using centuries-old techniques. Not a tourist display
- Ajman Corniche beach is a clean, calm, uncrowded compared to Dubai’s coast
Good to know
- Combines easily with Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain on the same day trip
- Ajman has its own fish market near the creek and a worth morning visit
⏱ Time needed Half a day · Best combined with Sharjah or Umm Al Quwain
5. Umm Al Quwain
The least visited emirate. Least developed. Most honest. If you want to understand what the Gulf looked like before oil changed it, come here.
Must Visit Places in Umm Al Quwain
- Umm Al Quwain Fort and old town, genuine and not restored for tourism
- Al Sinniya Island, a protected wildlife reserve home to sea turtles, Arabian gazelles and falcons Marine Club, windsurfing and sailing in calm coastal water popular with UAE residents escaping Dubai crowds Dreamland Aqua Park, perfect if you are travelling with kids or just want a silly afternoon
The honest sell
No record-breaking attractions. The whole point is the pace and the coastline. The mangroves here are still actually mangroves, completely untouched and undeveloped.
⏱ Time needed: Half a day. Pair it with Ajman for an efficient northern sweep.
6. Ras Al Khaimah

The emirate that completely reorganises your mental image of what the UAE looks like. Mountains, heritage villages, world records and proper beaches.
Must Visits In Ras Al Khaimah
- Jebel Jais, the UAE’s highest peak at 1,934 m. The drive up alone is worth the trip. Temperatures there run 10 to 15°C cooler than the coast.
- Jais Flight zipline, the world’s longest at 2.83 km and certified by Guinness. Book in advance because it sells out in winter.
- Restaurant 1484 by Puro, the highest dining venue in the UAE sitting right at the Jebel Jais summit. The terrace views are extraordinary.
- Al Jazeera Al Hamra Heritage Village, the best-preserved pearl diving village in the Gulf, abandoned in the 1960s and still standing today.
- RAK beaches on the western coast, long and uncrowded, backed by resorts significantly cheaper than Dubai.
Good to know
RAK is genuinely usable in summer because of the mountain altitude, which is rare across the UAE. Al Marjan Island has excellent resort options with easy access to Jebel Jais. Book the zipline well ahead between November and March, ideally several weeks out. Al Wadi Desert resort is ideal for anyone wanting a luxury desert stay without the Dubai price tag.
⏱ Time needed: 2 days. Day 1 for the mountains and zipline. Day 2 for the coast and heritage village. 📍 Base yourself: Al Marjan Island or the Jebel Jais area for easy mountain access.
7. Fujairah
The only emirate facing the Gulf of Oman. Cross the Hajar Mountains from Dubai and everything changes: the water, the landscape and the entire feeling of the place.
Don’t miss
- Snoopy Island near Dibba, the best snorkelling spot in the UAE with up to 15 metres of visibility on a clear day and coral reefs that are still genuinely healthy.
- Al Bidya Mosque, the oldest mosque in the UAE built around 1446 AD, a simple mud brick structure sitting beautifully against the mountain backdrop.
- Fujairah Fort, one of the oldest forts in the country perched on a rocky outcrop above the city.
- Friday Market, an outdoor market along the Dubai road selling pottery, dates, honey and local vegetables.
- Chaotic and completely genuine. Wadi Al Wurayah National Park, the UAE’s first protected reserve with actual waterfalls fed by natural mountain springs in winter and spring.
- Ain Al Madhab Gardens, natural mineral springs that are warm, slightly sulphuric and have been visited for centuries.
Why Fujairah is different?
The Gulf of Oman is deeper and clearer than the Arabian Gulf, which makes a real difference for swimming and diving. There is no desert in Fujairah. The Hajar Mountains go straight to the sea. The E88 highway through the mountains from Dubai is one of the best drives in the entire Middle East.
⏱ Time needed: 1 full day. Give it 2 if you want to explore the wadis properly. 📍 Base yourself: Near Dibba for diving access or Fujairah city for the fort and market.
9-Day Itinerary: All 7 Emirates Done Right
Here is a structure that works without feeling rushed. Geographic groupings so you are not constantly doubling back.
- Days 1 and 2: Abu Dhabi. Mosque on morning 1, Louvre on afternoon 1, Yas Island on day 2.
- Day 3: Drive from Abu Dhabi to Dubai, stop at Emirates Palace for coffee and spend the afternoon in Old Dubai.
- Days 4 and 5: Dubai proper. Downtown, Palm, Kite Beach and either a Hatta day trip or a desert safari.
- Day 6: Northern sweep. Sharjah museums, Ajman fort and creek, Umm Al Quwain coast. Day 7: Ras Al Khaimah. Heritage village in the morning, Jebel Jais in the afternoon and overnight in RAK.
- Day 8: Fujairah. Al Bidya Mosque, Snoopy Island, Friday Market if it falls on a Friday and Fujairah Fort.
- Day 9: Drive back to Dubai via the E88 mountain highway for the best last view of the UAE before your flight.
Build flexibility in. The most common mistake is over-scheduling. If you fall in love with the Fujairah coast or want another morning on Jebel Jais, the itinerary will absorb it.
When to Go
November to March — Peak Season
Temperatures sit between 20 and 28°C on the coast, humidity is low and evenings are genuinely cool. Best for everything outdoors including desert safaris, beach days and mountain drives. Crowds and hotel prices are at their highest.
October and April — Sweet Spot
Slightly warmer but noticeably fewer tourists and better prices across the board. Still very comfortable for all activities.
May to September — Summer
Coastal temperatures hit 40 to 45°C with high humidity. Jebel Jais in RAK stays cooler because of the altitude, making it one of the few genuinely usable summer spots in the UAE. Fujairah wadis are shaded and naturally temperate. Crowds thin out and prices drop significantly.
Ramadan
Ramadan shifts 11 days earlier each Gregorian year so check the dates before you book. Restaurants are closed during daylight hours, public music is restricted and eating or drinking outside is not appropriate. Iftar evenings are a completely different and wonderful city experience. Embrace it rather than work around it.
The UAE Is 7 Trips in One Most visitors leave the UAE having seen Dubai and a morning in Abu Dhabi. Which is fine. Dubai is extraordinary.
But the zipline over 70-million-year-old mountain peaks, the 1446 mosque still standing against a backdrop of cliffs, the pearl diving village abandoned in the 1960s and barely touched since, the coral reefs facing the Indian Ocean — none of that is Dubai.
Seven emirates. Seven different personalities. One very small, very driveable country.
